Dream Garden Design

“If you can dream it, you can do it.”Walt Disney

Our Dream Garden Design service aims to support you to achieve your “dream garden”. If you have a garden project or makeover in mind then Dream Garden Design is for you. With your vision and our gardening expertise, our Dream Garden Design programme will ensure that your dream becomes a reality. After all, if you can dream it, you can do it!

At Horkans, we want you to love your garden and see it as an important part of your life and home. Your garden can enhance your life in so many ways. It can be a place to relax, read a book, listen to music, play, cook and entertain. It's a place to be enjoyed with family and friends. Overall, your garden should enhance your lifestyle, bringing you great joy and happiness daily. The trouble is we often associate our garden with work and chores. We focus on the form of the garden, rather than the endless uses or functions. The concept of function over form allows you to use your garden to benefit your lifestyle.  In doing so, you are guaranteed to enjoy spending time in your garden.

"It’s time to think of function, over form, when it comes to designing your perfect garden."Paraic Horkan

When designing and planning a new landscape it is important to ask yourself a few key questions:

How will your garden be used?

The first question you should ask yourself is 'how will I use my garden?" A lawn is beneficial for a child-friendly garden. It creates a space for fun, games & activities. It is also a place for toddlers to explore and experience the wonder of the outdoors. Perhaps you want a space to sow and grow fruit and vegetables? You may want a private, peaceful garden to meditate in or curl up in with a good book? Or perhaps you dream of an all-weather, outdoor, living-space? Your garden can be a place to lounge in, listen to music in, barbecue and entertain family and friends. Everyone has different needs and wants for their garden, so remember this before you start designing your dream garden.

Do you want to encourage wildlife to your garden?

If the answer is yes, there are many ways that you can attract wildlife to your garden. You can restore habitat and encourage native wildlife by planting native plants. Growing plants with berries, nuts and seeds will attract birds and squirrels, whilst bees & butterflies are attracted to flowers. Remember that insects, worms and other small wildlife also play an important role in the propagation of new plants.

What are your desired maintenance requirements for your garden?

The current trend is for a low (or no) maintenance garden. This allows you to focus on enjoying your garden space for living life better with family and friends. When deigning a garden it is important to consider the amount of time you are willing to dedicate to your garden. Then, you can tailor the design and fit of your garden to suit your requirements.

Do you intend to grow your five a day?

If you plan on growing fruit and vegetables in your garden, an area can easily be incorporated into any landscape. You may want to set an area aside for a vegetable garden or add a greenhouse or polytunnel. Fruit trees and berries can be incorporated into any landscape plan, whilst many plants can be grown in raised beds, patio tubs, shrubs and flower borders.

Plan for success:

The planning stage is a very important stage of the Dream Garden Design process. At this point it is very important to get advice from an expert and discuss the ideas you have for your garden. For example, a path may be necessary to allow access to different parts of your garden. A screen may be needed to create privacy or cover up an unsightly view, whilst a fence may be considered to keep kids or pets in and unwanted trespassers out. At this stage it is important to carefully consolidate your needs and wants and plan the details of your garden. After all, preparation is the key to success.

Time to design with Horkans:

Once you define your goals, you can begin designing your dream garden. At Horkans, we recommend you complete a photo visualisation for your garden. This is a simple process where you take pictures of your garden, outline what you want it to look like and we create a digital image of your dream garden. This will allow you to see your garden, after its transformation

Our Dream Garden Design is a 3 step process:

  • You visit your local Horkans store - bring photos of your garden and a description of what you want your garden to look like, your requirements and lifestyle needs.

  • Our design team will provide you with key recommendations for your garden and a photo visualisation of your dream garden.

  • We will organise a follow-up meeting with you to discuss the details of your dream garden and agree next steps.

“We really enjoyed working with the design team. Their expert advice was readily shared and led to a detailed, accessible and exciting design for our garden. We are very happy to recommend their work.” Sarah, Westport, Mayo
