The May plant of the month is a member of the popular Cistus family, called the "Sun Rose" or "Halimium Libanotis". It is a dwarf, evergreen shrub, meaning you can look forward to its sparkling presence all year long. It has dark, narrow leaves which provide the perfect foliage for its abundance of golden yellow flowers. Its cup-shaped flowers are bright yellow, with a deeper sunrise colour in the centre. The flower brings a Mediterranean feel to your garden all year round.

When does a Sun Rose bloom?

The Halimium Libanotis blooms from late Spring to Autumn. During this period it is smothered in brightly coloured flowers which add a splash of sunshine to a garden or patio.

Where should I plant a Sun Rose?

As the name suggests, the Sun Rose loves a sunny location.  It is an easy to maintain plant and can be planted in any garden. It grows best in well drained soil and even prospers in exposed, seaside locations.The Halimium Libanotis should be planted in groups of three to five, in mixed garden borders and rock gardens. This will create a stunning cluster of colour in your garden, adding energy and vitality to the area. 

How do I care for a Sun Rose?

This flowering evergreen is a low-maintenance plant that requires little pruning. In mid to late spring, one can remove any damaged or unsightly shoots. Then, use an all purpose fertiliser to encourage new growth.

My May plant of the month is a special plant in many ways. The beauty and color it adds to a garden is evident immediately, as the Sun Rose casts sunshine in its step.
